Jane Lynch paid a moving tribute to her Glee co-star Cory Monteith at the 65th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Speaking
about the 31-year-old who lost his battle with addiction in July, Lynch
acknowledged the controversy surrounding the decision to honour the
youngster, and not other stalwarts of the TV world such as Larry Hagman
and Jack Klugman.
'This summer on our show Glee we suffered a painful death in our family,' the 53-year-old actress solemnly told the audience.

Heartfelt tribute: Glee star Jane Lynch during a
segment on Sunday night's Emmys spoke lovingly of her late co-star Cory
Monteith who died in July of an alcohol and heroin overdose
She gave a little background on
Cory's character Finn Hudson who went from star quarterback to
'wide-eyed and heartfelt glee singer.'
'From the first time you saw Cory he had a star quality and a genuine
sweetness that made it impossible not to fall in love with him,' she
said.
The actress assured Cory's fans that his warm and charm was not an act.
'Cory was a beautiful soul. He was not perfect, which many of us here
tonight can relate to. His death is a tragic reminder of the rapacious,
senseless destruction that is brought on by addiction,' she said.
Gifted and wonderful: Jane said Cory had an unbridled sense of generosity
'Tonight we remember Cory for all he was and mourn the loss of all he could've been,' Jane said.
She also told his fans that he was worthy of their love.
'If
you were lucky enough to know Cory as we did and witness first-hand
Cory's goofy, breezy sense of humour, his natural instinct for
inclusiveness and his unbridled sense of generosity day in and day out, I
promise you would have loved him even more,' Jane said.
The tribute ended with a black screen and the message 'Cory Monteith 1982-2013.'
Lighter moment: Jane performed with Jimmy Kimmel in the opening monologue as Emmys host Neil Patrick Harris looked on
Edie Falco of The Sopranos also
gave a heartfelt tribute to her co-star James Gandolfini, who died
unexpectedly in June after suffering a heart attack in Rome at age 51.
The
50-year-old Edie portayed Gandolfini's on-screen wife Carmela Soprano
on the hit show and dedicated her tribute to shedding light on her
co-star's true personality that was far different than his famous
violent mobster character Tony Soprano.
'He had tremendous warmth and heart. He was kind. He was uniquely generous,' Edie said.
Fond memories: Edie Falco delivered a moving
tribute on behalf of the late James Gandolfini, her co-star on The
Sopranos at the Emmys in Los Angeles, on Sunday
She said that over the years
she became moved by his 'devotion to his family and his fierce loyalty
to his friends, to all the people in his life.'
'You
can ask anybody who knew him, if you needed anything at all, ever, Jim
was there to take care of it before you even had a chance to ask,' she
said.
Edie said
audiences knew him as an actor, but she was lucky to 'know Jim the man
for 10 years as his close colleague and his pretend life partner and for
many more years as his friend.'
'And it's Jim the man, the very dear man, that I will miss most of all,' she said.
The show also featured a tribute to
Jean Stapleton, best known as Edith Bunker on All In The Family, that
was delivered touchingly by her on-screen son-in-law Rob Reinger.
Claire
Danes in her acceptance speech for best actress in a drama series paid
tribute to show writer Henry Bromell, who died in March at age 65 of a
heart condition.
Bromell won the award for drama writing on Sunday and his wife Sarah gave a tearful acceptance speech on his behalf.
Emotional tribute: Edie talked lovingly about her friend and colleague on The Sopranos
He was kind: Edie talked about how James Gandolfini was markedly different than his character on The Sopranos
The loss of the television stars has been hard on their fans and their colleagues.
Jane on Friday spoke out about her daily battle to overcome grief at Cory's death.
'I think that grieving comes in waves,' she told People at a Pre-Grammy event on Friday.
'Every
day that I go to work, I walk past his trailer, and every time I look
at a call sheet I see that his name is not on there. Every time I do a
scene with the kids I realize that he's not there, so you're reminded in
every moment. It's hard, and it feels like such a waste.'
Lost love: Cory's death has been particularly tough for co-star and real life love Lea Michele, shown together in August 2012
But she explained that the loss of the 31-year-old is of course much, much harder for his girlfriend Lea Michele.
He said: 'I know it's just been brutal for her.
'I
never lost a boyfriend when I was 26 years old. I can't tell her what
her experience is. She's a champion, and she is a rock star, and she is
getting through this.'
The
Fox show is set to pay tribute to Monteith in a special episode airing
next month. And after she read the script, Lynch reassured fans on
Twitter that it was the "Most beautiful thing."
